Johann Wilhelm II, Elector Palatine, Duke of Jülich-Berg, and Count Palatine of Neuburg—affectionately known in Düsseldorf as “Jan Wellem”—was born in 1658 at the Düsseldorf City Palace.
In 1679, he assumed the title of Elector Palatine and Arch-Steward of the Holy Roman Empire, initiating a golden era in Düsseldorf’s history. The city became one of Europe’s leading cultural centers.
